The unexplained death of an intern physician at the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital's Margaret Kenyatta Mother-Baby Maternity ward is being looked into by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nakuru.

According to a statement made by Nakuru County Executive Member for Health Services, Roselyn Mungai, the medic’s death was discovered in the trenches outside the maternity wing at about 7:00 a.m. on Sunday.

She said that the body, which was later taken to the hospital mortuary by the police, had no physical injuries, adding that his personal goods were likewise intact.

“The individual whose time we cannot divulge still had his phone in his pocket at the time of discovery,” the CECM said.

She said the deceased was identified as one of the medical officer interns who had been serving the hospital since August 2023.

“The County Government of Nakuru, Department of Health, regrets the unfortunate incident. Governor Susan Kihika expresses profound sorrow and extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the entire PGH fraternity for the tragic loss of one of their own,” Mungai said.

She stated that the deceased's family has been notified and that the police and DCI were actively looking into the case to find the exact cause of death.

The family had not made a statement by the time of going to press.
