Former Citizen TV news anchor Janet Mbugua has opened up on the challenges she underwent while working on TV, with her first pregnancy.

In a post seen by the Star, Mbugua who was expecting her first child said social media users attacked her for being 'too pregnant' and she could not understand why.

"In 2015 when I was a News Anchor on Citizen TV, and pregnant with my firstborn, Huru, I was attacked online, with a lot of vitriol towards me for being ‘too pregnant’ Yes, too pregnant. Make it make sense!" she said.

Mbugua went on to say most of her attackers wanted her to stop reading the news and take a break until after her maternity leave.

She however did not yield to the attacks.

The former news anchor said that she had great superiors who supported her throughout the process.

"A lot of the comments were asking for me to come back on the news after my maternity leave. I pushed back, and had an amazing team and great bosses who backed me," Mbugua said.

The mother of two noted this is just a part of the many sexism attacks ladies continue to face online.

"It was one example among many, of online sexism, that millions of people, but especially girls and women, continue to face," she said.

Mbugua made the revelation ahead of the International Gender Champions event where she had been picked to be the Keynote Speaker.

Among the issues that she was set to speak about were the rising cases of online violence.

Janet Mbugua worked for Citizen TV for over five years, before she quit to run her Inua Dada foundation.
