Nyamu defended herself in the House on Tuesday, claiming she was unaware that there are persons whose job it is to count the number of times a Senator or MP has spoken.

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has criticized a Mzalendo Trust study that named her as one of Parliament's least active youth senators.

According to the research, Nyamu is among other senators, Hezena Lamaletian and Chimera Mwinzago, who have spoken in Parliament less than 27 times.

Nyamu defended herself in the House on Tuesday, claiming she was unaware that there are persons whose job it is to count the number of times a Senator or MP has spoken.

“First of all Mr Speaker, I did not know that there are people out there whose work is to count how many times we speak in this Senate,” Nyamu said.

She went on to say that she would make an effort to speak in the House to keep the researchers active in their work.

“Since I’m aware, I’ll make sure I keep them very busy,” Nyamu said.

According to the report, Nyamu has spoken for 17 times since she was nominated in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.

The 2023 Parliamentary Scorecard covers the period between September 29, 2022, to June 30, 2023.

Hezena who was nominated from the Orange Democratic Movement party only spoke 21 times.

She urged Kenyans to ignore the ranking done by Mzalendo Trust adding that actions are better than words.

"Ignore that ranking. It is based on who are the loudest noisemakers in the House and all of us cannot be parrots. I speak only when necessary," she said.
