In Bell's palsy, one-half of the facial muscle weakens, causing the face to droop.

Bell's palsy typically goes away on its own in four to six months, depending on the person's immune system, according to city doctor Mark Otieno.

He claims that the disorder frequently results in facial deformation.

"Bell's Palsy normally occurs when an individual's immune system reacts to an infection, although its exact cause is unknown but would resolve within months on its own or with the help of physiotherapy," he said.

The eyelid may be difficult to close, one-half of the face may become weak, and drooling may occasionally occur as symptom.

Last year, international music sensation Justin Bieber also revealed that he was suffering from a facial paralysis condition called Ramsay Hunt syndrome which forced him to cancel a couple of shows he was set to perform at.

Compared with Bell's palsy (facial paralysis without rash), patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome often have more severe paralysis at onset and are less likely to recover completely.

In the vast majority of cases, Bell's Palsy causes facial nerve paralysis. However, in some cases, Ramsay Hunt is the cause.

To diagnose Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, a healthcare provider may order blood tests to look for the causative virus.
