Traffic cop killed by speeding car while controlling traffic

A traffic police officer was killed in a tragic road accident at the Kiambu Road/Northern Bypass junction in Kiambu.

Witnesses said the car was moving at high speed from Nairobi's direction when it hit Korir at about 6.30 pm.

The impact injured the officer in the head and chest killing him on the spot.

Witnesses said the head was badly injured leading to bleeding at the scene.

Police said the driver was arrested and detained at the Kiambu police cells ahead of his arraignment.

Police said he did not have a driving license at the time of his arrest.

Residents claimed he was a carwash attendant who was taking the car to the owner.

"We understand the driver was from a carwash in the area and was taking the car to the owner when he lost its control," they said.

The vehicle was detained for inspection. He told police he lost control after brake failure.

Meanwhile, a bus killed a 70-year-old passenger moments after he had alighted from it in Kinna, Garbatula, Isiolo.

The bus driver told police he was racing along Isiolo-Modogashe road when he stopped near Kulamawe shopping centre for some of his passengers to alight.

And as he started the bus to proceed with his trip, it started moving backwards due to brake failure.

It then ran over one of the passengers who had alighted killing him on the spot.

Police visited the scene and detained the bus and driver after moving the body to the mortuary.

In Kiaga, Kirinyaga, police said a pedestrian was killed by a speeding passenger service vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle said the pedestrian was walking on the left side of the road when he hit him. He was rushed to Keruoya County Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The matatu was detained for inspection.
