More anti-riot police have been deployed in Mathare, Nairobi after protesters barricaded a section of Juja road near the Moi Airbase camp.

Police were forced to lob teargas canisters to disperse the protesting youth.

During morning hours, police remained on high alert in various city estates ahead of the planned demonstrations by the Azimio la Umoja mass action.

Most parts of Eastlands which include Mathare, Huruma, Dandora, Mlango Kubwa and Eastleigh had a heavy police presence in strategic locations.

Tension remained high in these areas with most shops closed and very few public service vehicles were plying the routes.

On Sunday, Inspector General of police Japhet Koome assured the residents and business traders of their safety as they go about their businesses-this has however been defied.
