A house wife in Ruiru was on Thursday arrested after hitmen she allegedly hired to kill her husband reported the matter to the police.
Lucy Nyambura was arrested at her Gitambaya home hours after the four gunmen went to the police and told them she wanted Robert Gikonyo killed so that she could gain control of the family’s property.
Police sources said the gunmen reported that Nyambura gave them more than Sh100,000 to kill Gikonyo, the principal of Gatamae secondary school in Kiambu.
The killers then approached Gikonyo and told him of the plan for his murder. Together they hatched a plot that included him handing over his ID card and mobile phone to them as proof that he had been killed.
Gikonyo went missing for three days after his supposed death on November 8 and returned to his home on the night of November 11, police said.
A shocked Nyambura then reportedly went into hiding but was arrested on Thursday evening and locked up at Ruiru police station for interrogation. Ruiru police chief Isaac Thuranira confirmed the arrest but declined to comment further. Nyambura will appear before a Thika court on Friday afternoon to answer to charges of planning to kill.
