Jeff Koinange wrote an excellent tribute to his late friend Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore. The glowing eulogy was written on the Star website.
He revealed the humourous nickname that he called him as Bob ‘Kihara’ Collymore. Why the name Kihara? Because Bob obviously had a bald dome and Kihara means bald head in Kikuyu.
Jeff said that he first met Bob in 2006 during one of his ‘Bench’ interviews and thought that he was one of Michael Joseph‘s foreign bodyguards. He said that Micheal who was then the CEO of Safaricom introduced the two, saying;
Jeff, meet Bob Collymore. He works for Vodacom down in South Africa and he’s here for a few days.
It was only a few weeks later when MJ introduced Bob as the new CEO much to Jeff’s shock. Jeff wrote that they instantly hit it off with Jeff admiring Bob’s humanity and humility.
Jeff also described how Bob had purposed to fill in Michael’s shoes as CEO of Safaricom saying;
I can never wear Michel’s shoes. I’m going to wear my own shoes.
Jeff adds that he was able to but that fact didn’t change who he was to his inner circle, referring to him as Bob or Kihara or just plain BC.
Jeff added that Bob loved his Jazz Music and openly scowled at his love for Country Music (this, I’ll never know why) never failing to listen and more so speak his mind.
Jeff also reminisced that Bob was full of life when surrounded by children, always making time to listen to them no matter their ages. He also said that Bob was the ultimate people person taking a million selfies in the streets of many Capitals, always accommodating, always smiling.
His last great speech that he gave his famous boy’s club was;
I’ve lived a great life, Gents. I’ve made mistakes but I rectified them. That’s what you guys have to do. Rectify your mistakes otherwise, you will have learnt nothing from life. Thanks for being there for me. You guys are my real friends.
Jeff finished off his beautiful ode to his intimate with;
That was my last memory of Kihara….. at his front door waving goodbye to us. It’s like he knew deep down inside that it was the last time we would see each other on this earth.
