I recently spoke to lanky comedian, Jasper Murume. The man was a fun interview who wasn’t afraid to broach controversial topics in his life and the industry that has made him so well-known.
One topic the actor spoke about was the influence of the late Papa Shirandula actor, Charles Bukeko. Jasper explained that although he had never met him in person that Charles had helped many in the industry.
“I never worked with him or met him but I would love to do some production and employ some people like him. Si you know Njoro, Otos and Jalang’o were jengwad by Papa Shirandula as they came through the ranks,” Jasper said.
He then went on to give high praise to the departed Shirandula comparing him to Churchill Ndambuki-a man who’s influence on the comedy industry being monumental.
“Yeye na Churchill hakuna tofauti! They are the veterans who persisted and started something that would heavily influence the industry. They know how to build and brand themselves,” he opined.
For those who aren’t aware, Churchill’s show has been responsible for launching the careers of many of the industry heavyweights.
Comedians who have seen it grow their careers include; Eric Omondi, MC Jessie, Chipukeezy, Fred Omondi, YY (Oliver Otien), Owago Onyiro, Teacher Wanjiku, Eddie Butita and Mammito just to name a few.
Jasper went on to speak about the issues some of his fellow comedians were experiencing saying that all artistes had gone through a depressive period at one time.
“Hakuna msanii hajapitia hizo vitu! Hata saa hii msanii wowote asikudanganye ako sawa! You know creative people overthink even when it’s time for problems we also overthink,” Mr.Murume said.
