‘Why I believe I will defeat Mercado,’ Fatuma Zarika opens up

Forget the match between Harambee Stars and Ghana’s ‘Black stars’ at Kasarani, Africa’s finest boxer, Fatuma Zarika is the main reason why everyone is looking forward to Saturday.

The WBC Super bantamweight champion will be bringing Nairobi to a standstill on Saturday night as she bids to defend her title against Mexican’s Yamileth Mercado in front of her fans.

The much anticipated match will take place at the K.I.C.C.

Speaking exclusively to classic105.com, Zarika who has been training in the USA and UK, expressed her optimism ahead of the bout stating that the overseas training has just but added some needed experience in her game.

“It’s such a great thing to defend my title at home for the second time,” said Zarika. I have trained really well ahead of the fight thanks to my sponsors, SportPesa.”

However, the mother of two revealed that playing on home soil doesn’t come easy, as it always piles loads of pressure on her shoulders with hopes of not failing her countrymen.

“You know how these things go. The pressure is always there in such a huge match especially when playing at home. Playing at home and abroad are two different things. At home, the fans are always looking up to you to perform while away from home, it’s just you and the opponent,”

“I have done my homework and my experience is better than my opponent’s since I have played against far much better boxers than her. The training I have had is totally different from what I used to and I believe this puts me at a great position ahead of Saturday’s fight,” she added.

“I can promise them that I am not going to let them down,”
